When you grace me with your cold shoulder, whenever you look at me I wish I was her. You shower me with words made of knives, whenever you look at me I wish I was her.

Maria Miers comes from an impressive line of political minds- but despite being related to some of the state of Massacusetts’ greatest leaders (including controversial Senator Gregory Miers- R) she doesn’t seem to share the same interest in guiding the country. Seventeen sits down with the unpredictable socialite to get to the bottom of her own political opinions and plans for the future.

So you’ve finished your first year at Yale, modeled for The Gap, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton and Burberry just to name a few…and had your fist taste of acting with a guest starring role in Law and Order: SVU. I take it you’re not following in your family’s footsteps into politics?
Never say never. I’m just as capable of dodging a question as any of my family members, and I think that’s at the core of being a good politician. Not to belittle the work that my brother does, no, not at all- but I’m young and I have a lot to experience before I start entertaining the idea of public office. Like, say, a music career.

Really?
I’m joking.

But you did a great job in Prop 8, the Musical.
Oh, thank you. Yeah, I was really glad to be a part of that. So many of my friends were doing it- it was such an awesomely diverse group of people. And I love singing, I just don’t have any specific aspirations to come out with a solo album or anything like that. I’d rather sing back-up for a friend’s band or something.

Do you consider yourself a Republican?
A moderate Republican, yes. My personal beliefs are very conservative, but I don’t like forcing those beliefs on other people. As a Catholic, I try to live my life by example, not through judgment and by changing the constitution. And I support gay marriage because I don’t think that any religion owns the word. That’s really what it comes down to- a stupid word and how people want to define it.

So as multi-talented political royalty, what is the next step?
There are a lot of things I’d like to accomplish, but I’m also still a teenager. I’d like to write a book, open a store, continue modeling and see where it takes me. I’m very lucky to have all the opportunities and connections that my family has laid out for me and I don’t want to take it for granted. People like to act as if I don’t know I’ve been spoiled. I’m fully aware- and I intend to make the best of it.

How do you normally handle the negative press? Particularly in regards to your personal relationships, with, say, Leo Kingsley?
It's a combination of ignoring it and laughing at it, for the most part. I very rarely feel the need to address rumors about me... unless it's particularly slanderous to my family. And the Leo stuff is getting a little absurd. He's an incredibly talented musician and a good friend. I appreciate his passion and vision- but that's it. And frankly, I don't see myself in that tattoo of his.
